Program notes for March 22 program

by John Patterson

One of Bach's duties as Cantor of Thomaskirche in Leipzig was to provide a new cantata for each Sunday to reflect on the scripture reading appointed for the day.  A suitable hymn ("chorale") tune usually formed the basis  for the cantata, with individual stanzas incorporated into the separate cantata sections.

Choral Sympony Society continues its celebration of "Cantatas of the 90's" with performances of Cantatas 90, "Es reißet euch ein schrecklich Ende" and 91, "Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ",  and the introduction of Cantata 92, "Ich hab' in Gottes Herz und Sinn".

Cantata 90's text emphasizes humanity's sinfulness and God's mercy.  A chorale serves only as the final section;  its text is a prayer for God's guidance, "Guide us by your right hand."

Cantata 91 is a cantata written for Christmas Day, 1724.  The text is from a Latin song by Martin Luther.  The chorale "Praise be to you, O Jesu Christ", a tune known to exist as early as 1519 but whose origin is not known, is the basis for the cantata.

Cantata 92 is a cantata written for Septuagesima, the third Sunday before Lent.  The sections incorporate five stanzas (out of twelve -- yes, they sing every one of them!) of a chorale  text by Paul Gerhardt, "I surrender my heart and mind to God".
